World Rat Day is celebrated on April 4th every year. Rats are mammals that belong to the superfamily Muroidea. Rats are very different from mice. They are also a long tail rodent of various sizes. This day also promotes people to keep rats as their pet and recognize Rats as great pets and companion animals for people of all ages.
History of World Rat Day
On April 4, 1995, the Rat List, the first summary of the world’s most important ongoing discussions on rats, was submitted. Then, in 2002, a movement was started among Rat lovers to celebrate World Rat Day, and April 4 was chosen because it was a rare day for Rat lists to form. As of 1995, Rat list had about 2,300 members and was functioning as a meeting place and clean house for information on animal care. James Kittock and Robyn Arthur took over the group on April 4th, making it a perfect day for World Rat Day.
These cunning rodents have long been blamed for the spread of bubonic plague, especially during the Black Death that struck Europe in the Middle Ages, and are estimated to have wiped out up to 60% of the population. Recent research has sparked some debate about how much a mouse can be blamed, but quite a terrible blame to overcome!

- Rats have a good memory– Not only are rats very intelligent animals, they also have wonderful memory. They can map out a room and remember all routes to travel for a long time.
- Rats are social animal- Studies of rodent behavior have shown that rodents are certainly very sociable creatures, making rats the most social rodents of all. They prefer to live in groups with other rats and are very attached to their families.
- Rats are very suspicious- Rats are naturally suspicious of anything new in their environment.
- Rats are very clean and really hate getting dirty– Despite their general reputation as dirty animals, rats are actually considered very clean animals and you will think they really hate getting dirty! Mice groom themselves more often than cats, on a regular basis for several hours a day.
- Rats are color-blind and have a poor eyesight– Rats generally have a poor eyesight and as in color-blind human beings, rats perceive certain colors as shades of gray. Despite the lack of vision, rats have a very sensitive sense of touch through their whiskers. They use their whiskers as a sensory clue to support daily activities such as walking. touching an objects, navigate directions, searching for and distinguishing food.
